Sierra Espuña Regional Park

espuna.jpg

The Sierra Espuña is a pine clad haven of cool in the summer and a glorious place to enjoy a walk at any time of year.

The park´s 25,000 hectares are a maze of walks and routes, with recreation areas and restaurants, and offers many enjoyable options for those who enjoy walking, family picnics and barbeques or just a tranquil zone of shade in the hot summer.

Some of the roads up the mountain can be narrow and winding but you will be rewarded with some stunning views.

Barrancos de Gebas

barranco-gebas-4 (1).jpg

Located within the Sierra Espuña, The Barrancos de Gebas, or ‘The Bad Lands’ as they are known locally, is simply spectacular and in stark contrast to the lush green scenery of the Sierra above it. Also known as the Lunar Landscape as it does resemble the surface of the moon. The best spot to head to is the Mirador de Gebas. From here you'll get a stunning view across the landscape and of the jade waters of the reservoir below. There is plenty of free parking and you can walk down the steep-ish hill to the reservoir – but wear sensible shoes! The walk is not suitable for those with limited mobility.

To get there, your best option is to put Restaurante El Mirador de Gebas into your SatNav (the restaurant is excellent and we’d recommend a bottle of their Malatierra red wine which is produced locally, specifically for them – the label depicts the local landscape). From here the Mirador (viewing point) is a short drive away – with the restaurant on your right hand side, follow the road a short way until you see signs for the Mirador directing you down a road on your left.

The Castillitos Military Battery

The Castillitos Military Battery.jpg

The gun battery was built between 1933 and 1936 to prevent enemy ships entering the bay and attacking the important port and military arsenal at Cartagena. The Bateria de Castillitos military buildings are an impressive construction, built in an ornate style reminiscent of an ancient medieval castle.

You can look inside some of them including both the gun control bunkers and the towers, with the highlight being the huge 381mm guns with 17m long barrels.

The Castillitos Battery can be visited for free and is open all year round.

After a steep drive to the top with winding mountain roads, there is free parking and breathtaking views, which makes it definitely worth the trip. Be prepared to take along some snacks and water as there are no restaurant or toilet facilities on the site.
